May 09, David Roberts rated it really liked it. This book does a great job of breaking down a very complex subject into understandable chunks. I don't have a horse although I am a bit of an animal lover and thought this book would make an interesting book to read and review. Horses are very expressive animals and if there is something wrong as long as you know what to look for it is quite The book I read to research this post was Horse Health And Nutrition For Dummies by Audrey Pavia et al which is a very good book which I bought from kindle.
Horses are very expressive animals and if there is something wrong as long as you know what to look for it is quite obvious. There general health is usually checked by looking at their gums which should be pink and not white, red or blue.
Red means they have a fever, while white normally means cholic and blue means respiratory problems. There eyes should generally be bright and quite open. If they are partially closed or really wide open it can mean the horse is in pain. Another general sign is the coat which should be shiny and free of tangles. A dull coat will generally mean dietary problems. Horses tend to sleep standing up which is usually for a few hours each day and will lie down for about 15 minutes for a deep REM sleep as well. In the wild they would typically eat for 16 hours a day and are grazers who would often cover about 20 miles a day in their search for food.
They dislike very cold water in very cold weather so you may need to warm it a bit. They consume a huge amount of water and lack of it can lead to problems like dehydration and impaction. Even if you haven't got a horse this is quite an enjoyable read and I did find it very interesting.
