This is a powerful series that really grabs its readers. My only objection is the length of the timelines of these books. The plots of each book have several years in between. I don't want this series to end quickly. I want lots and lots of books about John Madden. Nov 13, Brian Fatah Steele rated it it was amazing Shelves: historical-fiction , mystery. I've read quite a bit of mystery genre fiction lately.

I'll be honest, most of it sucks in that cliched, pseudo-romance manner. After hearing Airth name mentioned a few times, I discovered his book in my store a gave it a try - I was captivated after only a few pages.

A John Madden Mystery Series

I love historical fiction, and seeing how these characters deal with a sexual sadist killer with such raw fear was breath-taking. We've become so desensitized to such things, we forget how those of a past era would have reacted with utter disgust.

A few times a got confused by the upper echelon of Scotland Yard characters, but that has more to do with my own ignorance on their titles than Airth's writing ability. My only two complaints is that Madden is being described as "scowling" too often - and I would have LOVED the book to have been a good page longer! There is no doubt I will be tracking down the other two releases by Mr. Airth quite soon. But when a young girl disappears and John, with a former colleague still on the force, finds her body, his old instincts come to life.

Once they start to investigate, an international trail of killings is uncovered. Although the story is more an assemble cast than focusing solely on Madden, you have an excellent sense of the characters in a well-plotted story. The suspense builds through the story to a dramatic climax. I only hope there is not another four years until the next book, as I really enjoy Mr.

A former inspector with scotland yard John Madden is enjoying retirement in Surrey when his help is needed on a horrific murder case where a female child who was brutally killed. This is unfortunatly not to be the last murder and it may not have been the first either.

Spys, murder and quiet life in the countryside are all mixed together in this story that will not let you go from start to finish. I cannot understand why this book has not been more recognised. I stumbled across this in the library and Ooooohhhh my I am so glad I did!!! This was book 2 in a series. I will def be going back and reading book 1 and then book 3. May 25, Amy rated it it was ok Shelves: This was so annoying. The author was probably trying to write strong female characters but failed miserably. He endowed them with personalities that made them virtually indistinguishable, regardless of age, and could not mention them without also commenting on their physical appearance in some way.

Obviously they were all plucky beautiful geniuses. It was so patronizing, like "By jove, this female has got spunk but it is tolerable because she is also beautiful. View 1 comment. Mar 21, Art rated it really liked it. Several years have passed since John Madden's first case. He has retired from Scotland Yard, gotten married and had children.

But when he discovers the body of a missing girl, he is drawn into an investigation that reunites him with his former colleagues. The result is another outstanding entry in this top-notch series by former Reuters correspondent Rennie Airth.

It is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I can not wait to read the next entry. A serial killer of young girls is on the loose in Great Britain, and a former Scotland Yard inspector, John Madden, finds one of the bodies. Despite trying to stay out of the investigation for his wife's sake, Madden can't let it go.

The nefarious murderer is a slippery one, and it will take all of Madden's observational skills plus all of the local police and Scotland Yard's finest to track down the killer before too many young girls are killed.

Tight, well-written thriller. Apr 29, Vontel rated it really liked it. I enjoyed this second volume in the original trilogy. Interesting plot twists and turns, as well as a police procedural in England in , likely accurate to its' time for both local police and Scotland Yard.

Character and relationship development over time, both within this book and the series, contributes to its' interest. Kept me reading. Have requested third volume of trilogy, and see there have subsequently been two further John Madden books published. May 17, Kathy rated it it was amazing Shelves: mystery-series , historical-fiction.

Second book in the series: Detective John Madden is brought out of retirement to try to figure out why a little girl has been brutally murdered. Through his research other similar cases in England and Europe are identified, and connections are made. This was at a time when serial murder was an unfamiliar idea, probably because communications and investigative techniques were less sophisticated. Oct 10, Knewmyer rated it really liked it Shelves: kindle-library , Good combination mystery-thriller-police procedural.

The crimes are horrific, though - I have a hard time lately reading about children or animals who are the victims of crimes. Compelling, atmospheric and scary. Sep 20, Shawn Jaquiss rated it really liked it. Pretty exciting. My only frustration is why have a mystery series with a detective who has left the force and only drops in to provide insight and then to solve the mystery? Aug 23, Beth Wynne rated it it was amazing. An excellent mystery with good plotting and well drawn characters. Airth seems to release a book in the series every 5 years, but I do wish he would not take as long.

Definitely a series to read and think about. Mar 13, Moirad rated it really liked it. A very successful combination of a bucolic English countryside setting complete with deferential, loyal servants and genial employers, enlightened attitudes towards tramps and gypsies and a horrific series of crimes, with the background of increasing anxiety about Germany's politics in the s. This guy writes a mean mystery! Too bad there's not more of them. The interesting John Madden gets drawn into another case - young girls being brutally raped and murdered.

Prewar Britain with the Nazi shadow hanging over Europe.

Truly a first-rate historical mystery, set in England just before the Nazi takeover of Germany which has some bearing on the plot , and involving high-ranking members of society. Nov 22, Lynn Rickard rated it it was amazing. This author creates such feeling and atmosphere in the telling of his gripping mysteries This book deserves all five stars.
